Understanding Headaches and Finding Relief With Your Chiropractor
As the end of year approaches, many of us find ourselves caught up in a whirlwind of activities, shopping, gatherings and all of those tasks that the festive season bring. While this time of year can be joyful, it can also bring added stress and tension, leading to an increase in headache frequency for many.
In this newsletter, we’ll explore the common triggers that can make headaches more prevalent during the holiday season, share effective management tips, and offer strategies to maintain your well-being amidst the hustle and bustle. Let’s ensure that you can fully enjoy the celebrations without the burden of headache pain.
Understanding Different Types of Headaches
- Migraine Headaches
Migraines are intense, often debilitating headaches that can be accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light, and other symptoms. They may be triggered by hormonal changes, certain foods, or environmental factors. - Tension Headaches
Often described as a tight band around the head, tension headaches are the most common type. They can be triggered by stress, poor posture or muscle tension. - Cluster Headaches
These are excruciating headaches that occur in cycles, often affecting one side of the head. They may happen at the same time each day for weeks or months. - Cervicogenic Headaches
Originating from the neck, these headaches are often caused by issues in the cervical spine. They can result from injuries, poor posture, or degenerative conditions.
Tips to Reduce Headaches
-
- Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can trigger headaches. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Manage Stress: Practise relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises to reduce stress.
- Maintain Good Posture: Be mindful of your posture, especially if you work at a desk. Use ergonomic furniture and take regular breaks to stretch.
- Regular Exercise: Physical activity can reduce stress and improve overall health. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days.
- Monitor Your Diet: Keep a food diary to identify any potential dietary triggers for your headaches, such as certain foods or beverages.
- Prioritise Sleep: Aim for 7 hours of quality sleep each night. Poor sleep posture can cause tension in the neck and contribute to headaches. A pillow that is too high or too low can cause the neck to be in an unnatural position, leading to strain on the neck muscles and ultimately causing headaches.
- Magnesium Intake: Due to the role magnesium plays in muscle contraction and relaxation, it can be effective for reducing tension headaches and migraines, which can become worse if you don’t have enough magnesium in your body. Ask about magnesium at your next appointment.
How Chiropractic Care Can Help

- Posture Correction: We’ll work with you to improve your posture, which can alleviate the strain on your neck and shoulders, particularly for tension headaches.
- Muscle Relaxation Techniques: Techniques such as massage and stretching can help relax tight muscles, reducing the likelihood of tension headaches.
